John James Audubon State Park Guide

It’s a great state park. My wife and I visited recently and really enjoyed our visit. In this guide, I’ll give you a full review of the state park and what to expect when you visit it.

PRO TIP: Stop by and pay for a visit to the museum. It’s the best museum we have ever been to. You learn a lot about John James Audubon and his history. I highly recommend visiting the museum.
Why is John James Audubon State Park Worth Visiting
The John James Audubon State Park in Henderson, Kentucky, is a fun state park to visit because it has so much to do there.
The museum was one of the best parts of it. You get these little cellphone-type devices, and you’ll learn about the whole story of Audubon for over an hour. They have a lot of artifacts there to see and learn about.
The Nature Center and gift shop are in the same building as the museum, and they feature many exhibits and cool gifts to buy for your friends and family.
There are over 7 miles of hiking trails rated for easy, moderate, and rugged hiking conditions. Check out these trails on AllTrails. We did the wilderness trail and really liked it a lot.
The namesake of the state park is known for birding, and it just so happens that this park is great for birding and wildlife watching.
There is a 69-site campground with restrooms and showers available. There are also 1 to 2-bedroom cottages available in the park for rent. Check with the park before you try to rent a cottage, as they have been doing renovations, and they may not be ready to rent at this time.
There is also a 9-hole golf course located at John James Audubon State Park for those of you who enjoy golfing.
The park always has many events going on. Check out their official events page to see what upcoming programs will be happening during your visit. The staff at the state park is very friendly, welcoming, and helpful.

To reach John James Audubon State Park from Shawneetown, Illinois:
- Take Highway 13 towards Kentucky and cross the Ohio River.
- Stay on Kentucky 56 E for 12.5 miles.
- Turn left onto US 60 and continue for 24 miles.
- Keep left to continue on US 41 for 1.3 miles.
- Turn left onto Watson Lane for 1-mile
- Turn right onto US 41 N
- Turn right into the John James Audubon State Park
All roads leading to the John James Audubon State Park are paved. All vehicles should be able to make it just fine. There is adequate parking available at the state park.
During wintry and flood conditions, the park may be unreachable. Please check in with the park by phone before you visit. Avoid visiting the park during hazardous weather and conditions.
How Difficult is it to Hike at John James Audubon State Park
John James Audubon State Park has a combination of easy-to-moderate hiking trails throughout the park.
The King Benson Trail is rated as easy on AllTrails and is about 0.3 miles of hiking, which would be good for families, children, and hikers who require easier trails.
Check out the Woodpecker Trail for a shorter but moderate hike. The Kentucky Coffee Tree, John James Audubon State Park Loop, and Wilderness Lake Trail are all over 1-2 miles of hiking. We really enjoyed the Wilderness Lake Trail but be warned that it is fairly hilly.
The Eagle Glen Pet Trail is a 0.8-mile trail that allows pets that are on a leash. No other trail in the state park allows pets. Please clean up after your pet and dispose of the cleanup bags properly.
The Wetlands Trail is located in a remote area near the park. I’ll be creating a separate guide for it. It features a beautiful boardwalk and is also pet-friendly.
Most of the trails at John James Audubon State Park are a nice walk in the woods, but there are things to see along the way, especially if you enjoy birding, nature viewing, and wildlife observation.
Best Time to Visit John James Audubon State Park
John James Audubon State Park is beautiful in all seasons. We visited in the summer, and it was very humid, but we still had a great time.
In the springtime, you can expect wildlife to start waking up and moving around after the winter, wildflowers to start blooming, and the forest to become greener.
The summers in Henderson can be hot and humid, but you’ll still enjoy a beautiful green forest with a lot of natural and wildlife presence.
Fall is a great time to visit to start seeing the changing of the colors and the last days of much of the wildlife before they go somewhere warmers or hibernate for the winter.
In the winter, you can see everything; there are fewer crowds, and you don’t have to deal with ticks and other biting bugs.
I suggest you visit John James Audubon State Park in all seasons and then comment on this guide and tell me which season is your favorite and why!
What to Bring to this State Park
Be sure you bring the right gear and wear the right clothing when visiting John James Audubon State Park.
The hiking trails in the park can be remote. You should bring the 10 essentials of hiking. At least bring enough water and snacks to keep you hydrated and fueled for the entire day.
First of all, make sure you wear comfortable hiking boots or shoes. Wear your normal hiking or fitness clothing that you would wear on any other trail. Be sure to layer up when it’s cold and pack some rain gear just in case you need it.
The John James Audubon State Park is all about birding, so be sure to bring your birding gear and cameras to enjoy a proper Audubon birding experience.
Safety Notes and Warnings
When visiting John James Audubon State Park, be sure to follow the park rules and put safety first during your time at the park.
The following rules are to be followed by all park guests:
- Pets are prohibited from most of the trails besides Eagle Glen Pet Trail and the Wetlands Trail.
- The park and trails are for day-use only, but a campground is provided.
- The trails are for foot traffic only.
- Do not feed, harass, or disturb the wildlife.
- Fires are only permitted in grills and provided fireplaces.
- Littering, disorderly conduct, and foul/loud music are prohibited.
- Swimming or boating in the pond is not allowed.
- Climbing trees or fences is not allowed.
Please practice common-sense safety when visiting John James Audubon State Park. Always watch your step, tell someone where you are going before you go, and try not to hike alone.

The John James Audubon State Park at Henderson, Kentucky, was very much worth the drive from Southern Illinois.
We loved the hiking trails and wildlife, but especially the museum. In my opinion, it’s the best museum I’ve ever been to. I highly recommend it, and it’s really cheap to explore, too.
