Taste of the AlpineAire Foods Wild Mushroom Fettuccine Alfredo Meal
As I said at the beginning of this review, the AlpineAire Foods Wild Mushroom Fettuccine Alfredo meal is the best one we’ve had so far.
The mushrooms can really be tasted throughout the meal. They give the fettuccine and Alfredo a new kind of flavor. To me, that was the most important taste. AlpineAire really got it down with this meal.
The sauce thickness after rehydration was perfect. There was plenty of sauce for both servings, but not too much, making it overwhelming.
The mushroom texture wasn’t bad at all. Honestly, it was like eating any other rehydrated fettuccine alfredo meal, only this one had a much better taste than all the others. It rehydrated evenly, and the whole meal was very good for both of us.
AlpineAire Foods Wild Mushroom Fettuccine Alfredo Preparation
Packing, preparing, eating, and disposing of the AlpineAire Foods Wild Mushroom Fettuccine Alfredo meal wasn’t a problem at all.
The meal is about the size of any other freeze-dried meal. It fit perfectly into my backpack and didn’t require any additional packing strategy.
Cooking the meal was simple. Pour in 1 ½ cups of boiling water, stir, and wait 12 minutes. You’ll stir the food again right before you serve it to ensure the sauce is evenly distributed.
We cooked our water in a small backpacking pot using the MSR Pocket Rocket stove.
Packability and Weight of the Meal
The weight of the meal is 4.9 ounces.
The meal packs are like any other freeze-dried meal. The durability of the pack seems to be very stable, and we didn’t feel that the material would rip easily. You could easily eat the meal straight from the pouch if you wanted to.
Performance on this Meal on the Trail
This meal was very filling for my wife and me when we tried it on our backpacking trip.
In fact, we had also cooked some mac and cheese from another brand to go with it in case it wasn’t enough, or we didn’t like the taste. The AlpineAire Foods Wild Mushroom Fettuccine Alfredo was so tasty, we both ate all of our servings and were pretty full after we were done.
The meal gave us plenty of energy return to sleep on and then get up the next morning for a hike back to where we started in the hilly Shawnee National Forest region.
I’d recommend this meal for lunch or dinner on your backpacking trips.
How Does AlpineAire Compare with Other Brands?
As I said, the AlpineAire Foods Wild Mushroom Fettuccine Alfredo meal was our favorite so far.
We’ve tried all the other main brands out there, including Peak Refuel, Mountain House, RightOnTrek, and others. While these brands are good in their own way, none of them were able to even closely mimic the great taste we got out of the AlpineAire Foods Wild Mushroom Fettuccine Alfredo meal.
We would definitely choose this meal again and again if it were available next to any other sort of freeze-dried backpacking meal.
