If you’re looking for a good backpacking hammock, this review is for you. I’ve been using the Wise Owl Outfitters DoubleOwl for backpacking for a few years now, and this review is based on my experience using the hammock.

Personally, I like this hammock, but there are a few issues I have with it, which is why I wanted to write this review about it.

Wise Owl Outfitters DoubleOwl Review: Quick Verdict

The Wise Owl Outfitters DoubleOwl is best for camping, backpacking, relaxing, and even as an emergency shelter to pack in your day hiking kit.

I wouldn’t use it for thru-hiking or longer backpacking trips because you don’t always know if there is going to be hammock camping compatibility where you stay each night.

My overall rating of the Wise Owl Outfitters DoubleOwl would be 8 out of 10, with 10 being the best.

What is the Wise Owl Outfitters DoubleOwl?

The Wise Owl Outfitters DoubleOwl is a two-person or double hammock used for camping and outdoor use.

Typically, the hammock will come with the hammock, hammock straps, and instructions. There is no rain cover or under quilt provided with this hammock. The straps have a carabiner system on them.

First Impressions

I got this hammock as a Christmas present from my wife, who had been using hers for a lot longer than I.

The packages were pretty standard and easy to get into. I observed no damage or misuse of the package.

The material feels very soft and comfortable on your skin. It feels sturdy, like it would last for many years, which it has so far. It does feel like a parachute when you lie in it.

The stitching appears to be very strong. It doesn’t have stitch-tearing sounds when you lie in it. There are plenty of stretches as you lie in it, but it doesn’t feel like it’s about to rip apart, either. It uses a triple interlock stitching for extra strength.

The hammock comes in many different colors with a solid cover for most of the hammock and a secondary color around the top trim of the hammock. I got the navy/light blue color combo. There are also options for gray, crimson, black, green, and 11 color options total.

The Wise Owl Outfitters DoubleOwl does feel like a beginner-friendly hammock out of the box. I feel like it’s simple to set up, use, and take down.

Setup and Ease of Use

The Wise Owl Outfitters DoubleOwl hammock is very easy to set up.

The tree strap setup is very easy. Each end of the hammock has a short strap attached with a carabiner. You take two straps of each end (2 straps total) and wrap the 9-foot straps around the tree to set the hammock height to your liking, and then hook the loops through the carabiners, and you’re ready to go.

The setup will usually take about 5 to 10 minutes. You might go a little longer trying to find the right height if you’re a beginner. After doing it a few times, you’ll know exactly where to set it up, and it will be a faster process.

I found no issues with the Wise Owl Outfitters DoubleOwl hammock in terms of sagging, strap length, or overall performance of the hammock during use.

Comfort and Space

The Wise Owl Outfitters DoubleOwl is marketed as a two-person hammock, but I don’t think two people could comfortably use the hammock, especially to both sleep in. In my opinion, it makes for a better hammock for larger people like me (I’m 6’5” tall, and I like plenty of room.

I would recommend this hammock for either one adult who requires more room or is of a larger build, or one adult and a child who wishes to use the same hammock. Two adults would be very tight and likely uncomfortable.

The hammock is very comfortable whether you’re sitting or lying in either direction. As I mentioned before, the material feels good on the bare skin, and the seams aren’t any sort of issue.

Performance on the Trail or at Camp

I’ve used the Wise Owl Outfitters DoubleOwl hammock in many different applications.

It’s a great hammock for setting up when you just want to relax at camp. If you want to rest and read a book, take a nap, or just get off your feet, it’s a great choice.

I’ve used it mainly for backpacking. You just have to make sure you know there will be trees good for using a hammock. It’s lightweight to carry and makes for a great backpacking setup.

It also makes for a good emergency shelter. It’s light enough to toss in your day pack and forget about it. If the need ever arises where you need to have shelter, you’ll have the Wise Owl Outfitters DoubleOwl ready at your side. The hammock packs well and is small enough to fit perfectly in your backpack.

Weight, Packability, and Portability

The Wise Owl Outfitters DoubleOwl hammock is great for backpacking, in my opinion.

It is lightweight at 29 ounces, which isn’t very much. If you’re super ultralight, then it might be too much, but if you’re a normal backpacker like everyone else, it’s not going to be that much added weight.

The hammock is easy to get into its stuff sack, too. It’s about the size of a large Gatorade bottle. You could put it in your backpack or even fit it in one of your water bottle holders on your backpack.

I put mine in mesh stretched pocket of my pack and barely noticed it’s even there. If it’s raining, I’ll stick it inside the pack near the top.

I think the double hammock is worth the weight, personally. I’m a bigger guy, and it serves me a good purpose. However, if you’re smaller, then you might want to go with the single.

Durability and Build Quality

The fabric is made from 210T parachute nylon. It is very durable. I’ve never once heard stitch tearing from it, either.

The straps are very durable. They grip the tree well and never slide down or lose their grip when I’m using the hammock. The carabiners are strong and never give me any sort of issue.

I’ve repeatedly used the Wise Owl Outfitters DoubleOwl hammock multiple times, and it has retained its strength. I’ve had it for a few years now, and I don’t see myself replacing it anytime soon.

It seems to hold up well in different weather conditions, too. I’ve woken up with dew on the outside but dry on the inside. It’s done well during very windy conditions, too. I’ve used it during early spring, summer, and even late fall when it got colder at night.

Pros and Cons of the Wise Owl Outfitters DoubleOwl

Here are the pros and cons of the Wise Owl Outfitters DoubleOwl hammock based on my own experience.

Pros

• The Wise Owl Outfitters DoubleOwl hammock is very spacious with the two-person model. I usually throw a top over one side and cocoon myself in.
• The hammock was very easy to set up, get into, and take down. Packing and unpacking are also simple.
• The Wise Owl Outfitters DoubleOwl hammock is around $40. In my opinion, it’s very reasonable, especially now with prices constantly going up.
• The fabric of the hammock is comfortable and soft, and the overall hammock appears to be very strong without stitch tears.
• I feel like the Wise Owl Outfitters DoubleOwl hammock is very beginner-friendly and can be used by folks of all ages.

Cons

• The two-person hammock would be too tight and uncomfortable for two people, in my opinion.
• The hammock is not great for cold weather. It’s not insulated, and you’d need an under quilt and an over quilt if you use it in colder weather.
• It doesn’t come with a rain fly. I was able to throw the side over the other side to cocoon myself in, but that isn’t very efficient, as it then feels too tight.

Is the Wise Owl Outfitters DoubleOwl Good for Camping?

I think the Wise Owl Outfitters DoubleOwl hammock would be a great choice for camping.

I’d use it for casual camping where hammock camping is allowed, backpacking, overnight hammock camping, relaxing at camp, or even picnicking.

It’s more of a lounge hammock, but I’ve been using it for backpacking for a few years now, and I haven’t had any issues with it.

Who Should Buy This Hammock?

• Best for casual campers
• Best for beginner hammock users
• Best for smaller couples, children, or adult/children who want a shared lounging hammock
• Not best for ultralight backpackers or serious overnight hammock campers

Who Should Skip It?

• People want a full overnight hammock setup out of the box.
• People needing a bug net or a rainfly are included
• People want maximum space for sleeping solo with an insulation setup.
• People into ultralight backpacking or thru-hiking

Value for the Money

In my opinion, the $40 price of the hammock seems very fair.

You’re getting the hammock, straps, and a durable product. It sells like a budget hammock, but it feels more like a mid-range hammock. If you’re just starting out, it might be perfect for you.

Personally, I recommend the Wise Owl Outfitters DoubleOwl hammock for anyone wanting to get into hammock camping.

It’s budget-friendly. It’s durable and strong. It’s comfortable and fairly lightweight to carry.

It’s not big enough for two people, in my opinion. You’ll need to get your own under and over quilt, rain fly, and bug net. It might not be ideal for the super ultralight-weight hikers out there.
